The Winsloe I knew

I grew up in Winsloe and the boundaries have changed parts of Winsloe are now under the Charlottetown Exchange. As well as boundaries the street names have changed as well as many new ones have been added.

I lived on Royalty Road which was “Hurry Road, “ to us growing up there. However when they changed it to Royalty Road it was quite a thing seeing as my parents were named, “Dianne and Charles,” and at this time, “Di and Charles of the Royal Family,” were on everyone’s TV and Magazine. Growing up we used to play a game saying as we ran back and forth,” this is Winsloe this is West Royalty,” on the Road, because across the street was West Royalty.

The now new development called,”ParkWest.” was our woods playground, not much is left just a few trees to show us the boundary of our childhood forest. As well as the tree area we spent most of our time at John England’s pit the place where we used to play in the pond.

Go down the Lower Malpeque Road on the right side you will see “Highfield Heights,” This we would first call it the back fields, then we came to call it the back roads, due to the fact the roads went in long before most of the houses did. Travel down the Road a little farther and you will see the cemetery we played games in as kids, I don’t remember anyone every being buried here. It seemed as if it’s occupants were always there. As mentioned across from the cemetery is the development of Parkwest. Follow this road to the end and you’ll be on Highway 2.

Turn before the end of the road. One way is to an area or Milton or Turn right and go up the road to Melody Lane and you’ll find at the end of this road“Winsloe Corner” this has seen many changes. On one corner Bob MacGregor’s smaller Shell Service station used to occupy where the now larger Petrocan/Robins is now. On the left side of this the Highfield Church was located, it has since built a larger newer church up the Winsloe Road. The Church is now PROUDE’S Floors. Kind of a pun don’t you think since it was a place to look to the heaven’s is now a place to look to the ground. The Other corner across the highway holds the hotel which is still there.

You can now go in two directions either up the winsloe Road or out the Highway as we would say. Out the highway , First you will come to Irving Convenience Store/Pizza Shack, which has changed it’s names a few times. First known as McLean’s Store where during lunchtime at School we could go up the path to the store to pay 10 cents for a creamsicle and on Wednesday get two for 10 cents. After McQuarries took over the store, this eventually housed the post office and still does to this day.

Up the road farther and you will come to Milton. It has a lovely Farmer’s Market located there where you can buy produce and even trees.

Come back to the intersection and go out the Winsloe Road, you’ll come upon Diamond’s Transfer,

Take a turn and follow the dirt road to the old area called the pond, It was a known teenage hangout for many. There was actually a pond you could swim in at one time. It is still there just not swimmable, It’s size has shrunk considerably. There is remenants of the old car seats that used to be hauled here for parties. Follow this road to the Confederation Trail or go on to Brackley Point Road.

Come back to Winsloe Road and go right and you will find there the old South Winsloe School. This is now an autobody place now It once was a school for grades 1-8, after that they went to Charlottetown Rural High School for grades 9-12. Grades 1 and 2 were in a mobile the other 6 grades and a small library and 2 washrooms were in the main school. As well as a principals office.

Behind the school is the new lions hall, the old one which was also the hall for the school burnt down and this new one was erected.

Across the street from the lions hall is Burke’s Auto this was built to house a post office for sometime.

Go up the Winsloe again and you will find the new church . Go a few more miles and you will find the old North Winsloe hall and up the road a little bit more you will find the old North Winsloe ,one room school house now an actual home.

Changes are always enevitable and certainly in a growing community such as Winsloe.

Once again the Winsloe corner takes on a new face. The hotel has been moved back off the road, and the Winsloe road has become a one way off the highway.

Another new face to Winsloe is Tim Horton's and Irving station on the left at the new set of traffic lights. This is located across from the Red Rock Harley Davidson store. Owned and run by a few and Winsloe's own Gary Dunning.

MacQuarrie's store has taken on the new face of Jim Perry's Upholstery, and the post office has been moved to the Irving Service Station.

Lots of changes with more to come I am sure.
